Low Pay Commission recommendation too much too soon
July 20, 2016Yesterday’s launch of Rebuilding Ireland by Simon Coveney, Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, is welcomed by Hardware Association Ireland (HAI). Ambitious and wide-ranging, this plan appears to have the teeth that Construction 2020, launched over two years ago, didn’t. Rebuilding Ireland involves relevant stakeholders across a broad spectrum with a fast-track process that will hopefully accomplish what previous plans haven’t, deliverables within a tight timescale.
CEO of HAI, Annemarie Harte commented, “The spirit of the plan is coming from the right place, it’s unfortunate it took an emergency situation to pull it all together, but we look forward to a paradigm shift in housing supply over the next number of years.” She continued, “The plan will take high level leadership to materialise and we look forward to frequent reports from Government on progress”.
HAI continues to call on the Government to implement a comprehensive Help-to-Buy scheme as this key feature is missing from the plan. “The plan isn’t a panacea for a normalised housing market but it’s a good start” Harte said.
