With the new year underway students in the HAI Certificate in Hardware Retail & Merchanting have reached the half-way point in their learning.
2024 caps off students’ Financial Studies
This nine-month mentor-based training programme aims to upskill employees in the hardware and building materials sector by offering them practical tools to excel in their roles.
Early December saw the students complete the Credit Control module, delivered by Declan Flood. In this session Declan emphasised the importance of credit control in business, focusing on profitable sales, setting clear rules and policies, and maintaining accurate master files. He also discussed the importance of effective communication, the use of positive words, and the need for a proactive approach to credit control.
Following this session, students completed another in-depth Product Knowledge module delivered by Keith Scully from Grant Engineering, this time covering the latest in the Plumbing Sector. Keith provided an overview of traditional heating sources like oil and gas boilers, and explained that customers often ask about both plumbing and heating items, so it’s important for staff to be able to direct questions appropriately or seek assistance if unsure. The session aimed to give students context and understanding to help them answer customer inquiries, whether from trade professionals or DIY customers.
2025 kicks off Operations Training
January marked the first session of 2025, covering Stock Control. Padraig Cronin led a discussion on the importance of stock control in retail businesses, emphasising its impact on cash flow and customer satisfaction. He also discussed various methods of controlling stock, including vendor-managed inventory and the use of accurate sales data and reports. He wrapped up the session by emphasising the importance of taking action after identifying issues and converting them into cash. He also reminded the students about the responsibility to control and take action.
Following this session, Kieran Duggan from Etex Ireland presented an enlightening overview of Roofing Products, including their development and innovations, such as fibre cement roofing products and components. He also highlighted key benefits of their products. He also discussed the importance of proper ventilation in roofing systems and the company’s training academy for roofers. His session concluded with an engaging Q&A session with the students, with questions about quality control, regulations and
The HAI Certificate is recognised for its focus on professional development and is regarded as a vital asset for career progression within the industry. Both participants and employers are enthusiastic about the value this training will bring, equipping staff with the skills and expertise necessary to thrive in today’s competitive market.
With more modules to follow, the certificate programme is set to continue its success in shaping the future leaders of the hardware retail and merchanting industry.
Up next students will explore Merchandising – what they need to look out for from an operational and managerial perspective in their stores.
